My Fin, Fur and Feathered Friends
 (some with scales)

I've personally had a variety of pets over the years,  dogs, cats, birds, fish, ducks, geese, goats, turtles, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets,  and once I even had a white rat that my son's biology teacher gave to him to care for.

There are so many different types of creatures that we make pets out of and call our friends or part of our family.
I will  place our friends into 3 separate categories, fin, feather and fur.

When my youngest son was 12 yr. old he decided to collect different types of snakes (non poisonous ones only ). We lived in the mountains along a ridge overlooking a river with a wooded area right behind the house. There were plenty of snakes to be found.  Even though it was common to encounter one or more snakes on a nice sunny day, seeing a large aquarium with a dozen or more snakes was still a little squeamish.

One day while he was walking in the woods he came across a large furry tarantula and decided he wanted to keep it for a pet, this is where I drew the line, after he had the pleasure of scaring the jeebies out of his sisters and brothers, showing it off to all his friends and class mates, he took the furry little creature back into the woods and set him free.

During one point in my life I really got hooked on raising tropical fish. My neighbor hand a beautiful custom designed aquarium stand that held a 30 gallon aquarium in the center, two 5 gallon aquariums, one on each side of the 30, and a 20 gallon underneath. The 30 gallon was a community tank with a variety of fish that were all fairly compatible and fascinating to watch. The 20 gallon housed one mated pair of veil tailed angels and one pair of  black lace angles, there was a glass petition between the two pair.

I decided to try my hand at raising tropical fish, I bought a 20 gallon set up and turned it into a community tank. In a few weeks my mollies began giving birth, (some fish are live bearers and give birth. They are generally more cannibalistic than egg layers. I bought a 10 gallon to keep the new fry from being eaten by the other fish.

Not long afterward my neighbor was in the process of moving into her new home and decided to sell all of her fish tanks and equipment. Of course I had to have them. I now had a total of 6 tanks and my fish were still multiplying.  I joined a tropical fish club where I could sell and swap fish with other hobbyists and learn more about the different species. A couple years later I had fish tanks in every room in the house and all over my basement. I won two international trophies for best breed on two different strains of guppies that I had developed over the years, a strain of solid black veil tail guppies and a strain of  blue snakeskin cobras. My black lace veil tail angel fish came in third place in Canada, they didn't show very well after being air sick from their plane ride. My hobby eventually turned into a small home business as a tropical fish breeder. I supplied pet shops and tropical fish stores with a variety of  tropical fish.
